Rudolf Gerlach-Rusnack (Tenor) (Duboutz, Ukraine 24. 7. 1895 † Munich, Germany 23. 1. 1960)




His real name was Orest Rusnak. He was of Ukrainian descent and took part in the First World War as an officer of the Austrian-Hungarian army. In 1917 he fell into Russian war. Here he excited sensation singing Ukrainian songs in camp evenings. After his dismissal he began in 1918 his education under Eugene Fuchs in Prague. He made his debut in 1923 at the Municipal Theater of Olmütz (Olomouc) as Rodolfo in ‘’La Bohème’’. In the 1924-1926 seasons he appeared at the Municipal Theater in Königsberg, from 1926 to 1927 at the Municipal Theater of Szczecin. After additional education with Jacques Stückgold in Berlin and with Lari in Milan he became a soloist of the Municipal Theater of Chemnitz (1928-1930). In the 1930-1931 season he was engaged by the Municipal Theater of Graz. Since 1931 he was a principal tenor of the Munich State Opera and started to appear under the name Rudolf Gerlach-Rusnak. He formed his artistic name Rudolf Gerlach-Rusnak from the name of his favorite hero, the Rudolf  in ‘’La Bohème’’ and the family name of his wife Elisabeth Gerlach. Till 1937 he remained a member of the Munich Opera, where he also performed in the premiere of the opera ‘’Lucedia’’ by Vittorio Giannini (1934). In 1938 he made guest appearance at the Vienna State Opera. In the 1941-1942 season he was engaged by the Municipal Theater in Bremen, in the 1942-1944 seasons he was a soloist of the  Municipal Theater in Innsbruck. In 1945 he joined again to the Munich Opera. After a cardiac infarction in 1946 he remained ill, however, undertook in the 1956-1957 season again a tour through Canada and the USA.

Born Blanche Hamilton Fox. She was a leading mezzo-soprano of the Boston Opera. First she studied at the Academy of Notre Dame in Rosbury, then continued her education at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Probably she made her debut in 1906 at the Teatro Cressoni of Como in G. Donizetti’s ‘’Favorita’’. In Italy she appeared on the stages as Bianca Volpini and made only two recordings there for Odeon.

Mathilde Saïman (Soprano) (Algiers 9 December 1891– Paris September 1940)




In 1914 she made her debut at the Paris Opéra-Comique in G. Charpentier's ‘’Louise’’ and remained at this opera house during the following seasons. In 1915 she appeared as Pierre in the première of the opera ‘’Les cadeaux de Noël’’ by X. Leroux. Two years later she performed there in the French premiere of A. Messager's ‘’Béatrice’’ (as Lélia, 1917). In 1923 she sang at the Théâtre Gaîté-Lyrique of Paris in ‘’Quo vadis?’’ by Jean Nouguès.

Marius Jørn-Nielsen (Tenor) (Denmark, Copenhagen 20. 5. 1881 - Denmark, Copenhagen 8. 11. 1934)




The Son of butter trader he studied singing under Poul Bang. He made his debut at the Royal Danish Opera House on 17. 01. 1909 as Turridu  in "Cavalleria Rusticana". Later he sang here the part of Don José in "Carmen", Canio in "Pagliacci" and Faust. In the 1912-1913 season he appeared at the ‘’Casino’’. From 1923 he worked at the Royal Danish Opera House as reserve prompter. During his career he also sang in operettas.

Manuel Romero Malpica (Baritone) (Puebla City, Mexico 10. 05.1874 - Mexico City, Mexico 1939)






First he studied with his father José Romero Malpica, who was the director of military bands and with his mother, actress and an opera singer. He continued his vocal training under Lion and Carnelli and on January 29, 1902 made his debut in G. Verdi’s ‘’Il Trovatore’’ at the Teatro María Guerrero of his hometown. He appeared in Mexico until 1905 and the next year went to USA. He became a member of several opera companies, included Boston Opera Company and San Carlo Opera Company. Later he appeared in Italy, France and Spain, made successful guest appearances in Central and South America. He returned to Mexico, where continued his career. In 1938 he sang the part of Rigoletto at the Palacio de Bellas Artes  in Mexico City. Shortly before his death he made his final appearance Teatro María Guerrero, where he and started his career. He was called ‘’Mexican Titta Ruffo’’. He could sing also parts of tenor, which he once done by replacing tenor Agnadi in USA. He made records for Columbia, Victor and Edison.

Ferdinando Avedano (Tenor/Baritone) (Cuneo, Italia 1863 - San Francisco, USA after 1915)






He studied singing at the Liceo Musicale in Torino and made his debut in 1890 at Teatro Comunale of Vicenza as Pollione in ‘’Norma’’. In 1899 he went to USA and became a famous dramatic tenor, often appearing with Gaudenzio Salassa, a fine baritone. Probably in 1906 he changed to baritone, but mostly appeared in concerts. After his retirement,  he taught singing in San Francisco and often organized concerts of his pupils. He made a few records for Edison.

Antonio Carrión (Tenor) (Valencia 1902 - Buenos Aires 1978)




He became an Argentinean citizen on March 3rd 1927. He studied in Rosariowith Mº Sismondo. Due to his excellent pitch, he was sent to study in Italy with Cavaliere Benedetto Luciniani. Two years later, he was heard by Commendatore Ferone in an audition at Teatro Alla Scala di Milano. Thereafter he started his career in different Italian theaters such as Nazionale di Milano, Adriano di Roma, Sociale di Campobasso, Vittorio Emmanuele di Torino Petrucelli di Bari etc., and southern Italy’s cities such as Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro, etc., were he sang his most representative operatic roles such as: Edgardo, Rodolfo, Fausto ( from Boito’s Mefistofele), Alfredo and Duca di Mantua. Because of his father’s death, he returned to Rosarioand made his debut at Teatro de la Opera in Lucia di Lammermoor followed by Rigoletto. In Buenos Aires, he made his debut at Teatro Politeama in Lucia di Lammermoor, and in Montevidero at Teatro Sodre with the same opera with Lily Pons and Victor Damiani and Mº Calussio at the podium. Then he was hired by Mº Paolantonio to tour in Brazil, performing at the teatro San Gaetano of Rio di Janeiro in Tosca, Boheme Traviata, Lucia, Rigoletto, and Cavalleria Rusticana. The tour ended with Lucia di Lammermoor, conducted by Paolantonio who was killed the day after during a rehearsal. After many recitals, he returned to Buenos Airesand few days later he was called urgently from Porto Alegre, where he had to replace Beniamino Gigli in Lucia, besides Bidu Sayao. In Argentina he sang in many provincial theaters , his repertory was Carmen, Aida, Rigoletto, Pagliacci and Lucia In the seasons of 1942 up to 1945, he sang many times at Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile: Trovatore, Lucia, Caupolicán ( by Remigio Acevedo), in the world premiere), Aida Trovatore, Cavalleria, Sayeda (by Pisquert), Ballo in maschera, Tosca and Rigoletto. He sang also at Valparaiso in Trovatore, Rigoletto, Butterfly, etc. In 1945 he made a Latin American tour with his wife the s. Angelici, this tour started in Lima (Perú) with Lucia and during 10 months they were singing in many important theaters operas such: Traviata, Tosca, Rigoletto, Marina and Lucia in cities such, Cali, Bogotá, Medellin, Caracas, Quito, Maracaibo, etc. After that in Buenos Aires, he sang in La Rural de Palermo with the Teatro Colon Company in Aida , and several operas at the Argentino de La Plata. During all his career, he was very close to the Teatro Marconi. This was the theater were all the Argentinean opera singers of those days prepared their main roles and it was their way into the Colon. Carrion was also manager and producer of this theater during the 50’s. In the early 60’s, he often sang at the "Lunes líricos", (lyrical Monday), were the young conductor Miguel Angel Veltri started in the opera world. His last performance was Il Trovatore, during those cycles. After he retired, he taught singing.

Nelly Martyl (Soprano) (1884 - 1953)




Born Nelly Adèle Anny Martin. She studied singing at the Conservatoire National de Paris under Martini and Isnardon. In 1906 she won a price and made her debut in 1907 at the Grand Opéra in Paris as Naiade in ‘’Armide’’ of Gluck. Then she sang there the part of Rafaële in ‘’Patrie’’ by Paladilhe and also appeared in the premiere of the opera ‘’La Catalane’’ of Le Borne (24. 5. 1907). In 1909 she joined to the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Here she sang many parts and performed also in several premieres.  In 1912 she participated there in the premiere of the opera ‘’La Sorcière’’ by Camille Erlanger (as Juana). Her repertoire included Rosenn in ‘’Le Roi d'Ys’’ of E. Lalo, Micaela in ‘’Carmen’’, Sophie in ‘’Werther’’ of J. Massenet, Fatima in ‘’Le Caïd’’ of A. Thomas, Laurette in ‘’Richard Coeur-de-Lion’’ of Grétry, Cupid in ‘’Orpheus’’ of Gluck and Mimi in ‘’La Bohème’’. Beyond the French metropolis she appeared also in French provincial theaters and made guest appearances at the Opéra Monte-Carlo (among other things in 1922 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Amadis’’ of J. Massenet) and undertook a tour through Romania. Married the known painter Georges Scott Plagnolles (1873-1942).

Enzo Baccante (Baritone) (Sulmona 1887 - New York 1938)


Artist and opera singer-Baccante's opera career probably started with his debut in 1909 at Faraggiana of Novara as Zurga in Pescatori di Perle. Performances by Baccante in Italy were traced from 1909 to 1914 in smaller Italian houses. He served in the Italian Army during the First World War and in 1922 emigrated to the U.S., at that point concentrating on a career as an painter and sculptor. He subsequently occasionally appeared in concerts and on the radio in the U.S. but was mostly active and recognized as a painter. He died of heart disease.

Roman Hübner (Tenor) (Mělník, north of Prague, Czech Republic Nov. 21st, 1891 - Prague, Czech Republic June 30th, 1964)




First he studied singing privately in Prague under Václav Viktorin, then continued his education with professor Ulanovského. He went to Italy and perfected his vocal technique under Piccoli in Milan. From 1921 to 1938 he was a soloist, then also a director of Slovak National Theater in Bratislava. He excelled particularly in operas by Verdi and Puccini. During the occupation, he worked in the Prague radio. In the 1945-1947 seasons he appeared as soloist and Director of the Opera Theater in Liberec. Then he worked as vocal teacher in Prague.

He was trained by Horbowski in Warsaw. In 1908 he excited the first sensation when he sang in Warsaw Tenor-solo in Stabat Mater by G. Rossini. The same year he debuted at the opera house of Cracow as Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’. In the 1909-1914 seasons he was a member of the Lwów (Lvov) Opera. In 1914 he joined to the National Opera in Warsaw, where he had a huge success and appeared here till 1939. On 19. 6. 1926 he sang there in the premiere of the opera ‘’Krol Roger’’ by Karol Szymanowski as shepherd. In 1941-44 he was engaged by the Miasta-Theater in Warsaw. His repertoire included Belmonte in ‘’Entführung aus dem Serail’’, Almaviva in ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, José in ‘’Carmen’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Eleazar in ’’La Juive’’, Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’, Lenski in ’’Eugene Onegin’’ and De Grieux in ‘’Manon’’. He was active as professor of vocal in Warsaw. Married the operetta singer Walerie Markowska.

Salvatore Salvati (Tenor) (Naples, Italy 1885 - Olten, Switzerland 1959)




He made his debut in 1908 at Caserta (near Naples) as Almaviva in ‘’Il barbiere di Siviglia’’. Then he had a significant career in Italian stages and appeared also in South America, among other things at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1925 he guested at La Scala, Milan as Florindo in ‘’Le Donne curiose’’ of E. Wolf- Ferrari. He lived later in Switzerland where he appeared at the Municipal Theatre of Basel, but also in Zurich and in Bern as a guest. He was the founder of the Salvati-Vocal quartet (with Leni Neuenschwander, Paula Koelliker and Karl Theo Wagner) which gave concerts in numerous European towns. Approximately in 1930 he finished his stage career, but in 1941 again appeared on the stage (Municipal Theatre of Bern). Later He became a singing teacher first at the Salzburg Mozarteum, then at the Basel Conservatory.
